About

The AI Strategies team examines two large research projects: Minerva, and CAIIEC.

MINERVA

The Minerva Project (2022-25) is funded by a four-year, $1.39 million grant that was awarded to George Mason University to study the economic and cultural determinants for global artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructures—and describe their implications for national and international security. The team began work on the project on April 15th, 2022. The grant was awarded by the Department of Defense’s esteemed Minerva Research Initiative, a joint program of the Office of Basic Research and the Office of Policy that supports social science research focused on expanding basic understanding of security.

AI Strategies looks at how cultural values and institutional priorities shape artificial intelligence infrastructures in national and global contexts, in order to better understand the effects of comparative AI contexts for security.

Center for AI Innovation for Economic Competitiveness (CAIIEC)

The CAIIEC is supported from a $1 million grant from the Congressional Development Fund -- sponsored by Virginia Senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine and provided through the U.S. Small Business Administration. The grant established CAIIEC, a platform dedicated to empowering small and medium enterprises (SMEs) with the tools and knowledge to embrace Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology. CAIIEC is the nation’s first center for AI innovation focused on bolstering the economic competitiveness of SMEs across Virginia.

CAIIEC is the nation’s first of its kind Center aimed at bolstering the economic competitiveness of small businesses in Virginia by harnessing the power of Artificial Intelligence.
